"Eight Rivers" owes much of its fame to Dunn's River Falls, a much-photographed and much-climbed attraction.
When we were there years ago, no one else was in the Falls . . . (a crab bit my toe, I lost my glasses, and now always travel with extra glasses and a copy of my prescription as a result of that misadventure).
Tours out of Ocho Rios (and Montego Bay) include Dunn's River Falls with a beach horseback riding tour and the Bob Marley Jeep Safari to "Nine Mile," the birth place and burial site of Bob Marley. This includes Mount Zion Rock, where Bob used to meditate. The road from Ocho Rios (or Montego Bay) cuts through Jamaica's beautiful backcountry and returns along Lime Hall and St. Ann's Bay along the North Coast.
We also opted for the Black River Safari from Montego Bay (also leaves from Ocho Rios).
Black River, the longest river in Jamaica, includes remote mangrove swamps, crocodiles and white egrets living in their natural habitats. It was an excellent full-day tour through a beautiful regions; our tour included a traditional Jamaican lunch before heading to YS.
Our guide on this route was excellent as was Ron, our driver for two of our daytrips. They pointed out points of interest as we drove along and answered hundreds of questions about the scenery, land, people, politics, religion, etc.
The Black River tour continues to YS falls, considered by many to be the most beautiful falls in Jamaica.
Wander up the path alongside the falls, swim and play in cool, refreshing waters or try zip cording through jungle canopy over the falls.
YS, the shortest place name in Jamaica, was originally a cane farm with a factory and a supplier of logwood for export to Europe. By 1887 the property had changed hands many times and was held in the Encumbered Estates Court in London. At that time, Great Grand Uncle (John Browne) of the present owner, Tony Browne, had traveled to London to purchase a property in St. Ann. However, upon arrival in London, that property had been sold. John Browne wanted a property with a river running through and bought YS Estate sight unseen.
YS continued to grow cane, logwood trees and raise cattle. In the 1950’s, the present owner, Tony Browne, started to breed and raise thoroughbred horses.
Quite a few of the tours include Fern Gully, a rocky gorge of tremendous depth zig-zags for about four miles down from the central mountain area down to the coast. Although it has become rather commercialized in recent years, it is still well worth a visit to see the profusion of tropical ferns (over 500 species) and the kind of foliage only to be found in a tropical rain forest. In the deepest parts of the gorge, only faint dapples of sunshine penetrate through the thick foliage and the temperature is about ten degrees cooler.

Heart of a Pirate: A Novel of Anne Bonny
This is a great story . . . my daughter found it for me prior to a recent return trip to the Caribbean.
Before going anywhere it is family "policy" to read at least a well-written historical novel about the area.
