After 40 years of world travel, Jamaica remains one of the most beautiful places we have ever seen. The island has hotspots that are fun for everyone; probably none moreso than Rick's in Negril.
Seven days a week, 365 a year, rain or shine, Rick's in house band Dollyman is jammin' true Jamaican Reggae. If you want the real thing, you have to visit Rick's! Can't wait to get to Rick's? Turn up the volume, sit back and relax mon! Rick advises us to "check back often for new sounds."
Richard Hershman opened Rick's Cafe in 1974 on a cliff over warm Caribbean waters. Visitors and local dive from his cliffside bar and patio into gin-clear water below. The highest platform jump is 35 feet. (Can't imagine how THAT started.)
Rick's has been blown away twice by hurricanes (1988 and 2004). The bar and restaurant has been rebuilt better eachtime.
Rick's crowd runs the gamut from Rastas to Rolexes as Jamaicans mingle with renegades who’ve escaped luxury all-inclusive resorts for a dose of local flavor and an only-in-Jamaica type of experience.
Negril Royal Palm Reserve: The Negril Royal Palm Reserve is a beautiful and tranquil forest within the Negril Great Morass and one of Jamaica's leading Eco-tourism attractions. You will find the Royal Palm (Roystonia Princeps, or Swamp Cabbage Palm as known locally), 114 plant species, and over 300 animal species including birds, butterflies and reptiles. The Morass Royal Palms are found no where else in the world. There is a museum where you can learn about native plants and animals and you can take a guided tour along the wooden Royal Palm Boardwalk Trail through the morass swamp forest. The Negril Royal Palm Reserve is truly an outstanding cultural and environmental experience. It is a great place for day tours, horseback riding, nature walks, bird watching, fishing, company retreats, weddings, meditation, special events, school tours, and scientific research.
Sandy Bay
If you enjoy off-roading, join a tour through Sandy Bay's terrain from the Blue Hole Estate to the beautiful community of Cascade (in Hanover) on 4-wheel ATV bikes, often reaching heights of 2200 feet (670 meters) above sea level.
You'll taste Jamaica's rich culture and heritage as you ride past farming villages, Smithfield, Cascade and an old Presbyterian church. Enjoy Jamaica’s native flora and fauna with many stops for photo opportunities. The White River for its entire length, forms the boundary between the parishes of St. Ann and St. Mary and flows into the ocean near Ocho Rios.
A Bit of Negril's History
Negril was named Negrillo by the Spanish in 1494 but has little history except as a haven for shipping. In 1702 British Admiral Benbow sailed into Negril and regrouped his forces after his ill-fated encounter with the French under Admiral DuCasse. In 1818 fifty warships and 6600 men sailed from Negril to tackle the American rebels and were put to fight the battle of New Orleans.
Heart of a Pirate: A Novel of Anne Bonny
The infamous Pirates Calico Jack and Anne Bonney were captured in Negril and were executed near Port Royal. This is a great story . . . Before going anywhere it is family "policy" to read at least a well-written historical novel about the area.
